How Do You Know if a Rooftop Tent is Compatible with Your Vehicle?
Choosing a rooftop tent that suits your vehicle is essential to ensure safety and stability on every journey. Before purchasing, it’s important to check a few technical requirements to make sure your car can properly support the tent.
1. Check Your Vehicle’s Roof Load Capacity
The most important factor in determining rooftop tent compatibility is your vehicle’s roof load capacity—it must be sufficient to support the weight of the tent both while driving and when parked.
Dynamic Load Capacity → This refers to the maximum weight your car’s roof can carry while in motion. It should be equal to or greater than the weight of the closed tent. You can usually find this information in your vehicle’s manual or by contacting the manufacturer.
Static Load Capacity → This is the maximum weight your car’s roof can hold when parked. It’s typically around three times the dynamic load capacity, allowing it to safely support both the tent and its occupants.
2. Check Your Roof Rack Compatibility
To install your Montaña tent, your vehicle must be equipped with crossbars that have adequate load capacity. Most factory-installed roof racks may not be strong enough, so it's recommended to use heavy-duty crossbars specifically designed to support higher loads.
3. Make Sure You Have the Right Mounting System
Montaña rooftop tents are compatible with most standard crossbars, as long as they meet the following criteria:
- Bars with a rectangular, aerodynamic, or oval profile
- Proper distance between bars to align with the tent’s mounting points (refer to product specifications)
- Load capacity equal to or greater than the tent’s weight
